Daughter of a WWII Link Simulator training instructor and aerospace engineer, Jan grew up in the defense and space exploration environments of Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio and Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. In Huntsville, most of her classmates were children of engineers and scientists, including those of Dr. Wernher von Braun, the acclaimed Father of the US Space Program.
Majoring in French and Spanish language instruction at the University of Alabama with plans for a teaching career, Jan turned to psycholinguistics and the science of second language acquisition at Texas A&M University where she attained a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction in 1973. After several years as an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor at the Florida Institute of Technology on Florida’s Space Coast.

Jan chose to emulate her father with a career in the defense industry as a technical writer and editor for companies such as Harris Corporation, L-3 Communications, Siemens, Honeywell and Northrop Grumman.
